Kip Coggins, Ph.D., is from the state of Michigan. His heritage from his mother’s side of the family is Odawa and Ojibwa (Ottawa and Chippewa) from the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians. From his father’s side he is of mixed French Canadian and First Nations Heritage. Dr. Coggins has a doctoral degree in Social Work and Anthropology from the University of Michigan. He is also a licensed independent social worker (LISW) with the state of New Mexico. He has served as the director of the BSW program in El Paso, Texas, and is currently the site administrator for the New Mexico State University Master of Social Work Program in Albuquerque.

In the late 1980s Dr. Coggins developed an approach to recovery and wellness now known as the “Recovery Medicine Wheel”. At the time he was struggling with recovery issues related to being an adult child of parents with serious alcohol problems. Since then Dr. Coggins has presented the Recovery Medicine Wheel approach to groups in Canada, New Mexico, and Michigan. He has also guided the formation of Medicine Wheel groups in places such as Victoria, British Columbia, The Penitentiary of New Mexico, New Moon Lodge at San Juan Pueblo, Boston Massachusetts, Browning, Montana, and at home in Northwest Michigan. The Recovery Medicine Wheel has even been adapted for use with Native American adolescents in Montana, resulting in the creation of workbook for youth.
